Never Say Never by April Popko
Artist Name and Artwork Title:
Never Say Never by April Popko
Description:
Inspired by the lunar new year of the fire horse, Never Say Never, is a reminder to stay open for what’s to come, symbolizing freedom, momentum, abundance, vitality, speed, loyalty and independence.
Like the fire horse, I run with high volt energy and courage and yet, I listen to the quiet whispers that come to me. I never thought I'd live in Europe for the rest of my life but I listened to that whisper. I also never wanted to "become" an artist and I said I'd never paint "things like horses." I definitely never expected to be part of the Bitcoin world either.
My journey has been full of unexpected surprises but these whispers come to me for a reason… So I run with it. I follow my instincts. This creation emerged from my passion to communicate through art, to remind us to run decisively, and … Never Say Never!

From the Czech President’s hands, to NY Times Square, and Vogue Magazine, the Popko name has been in galleries, media, film, books, and public spaces across the planet. April Popko is an international award-winning artist, whose work transcends borders, connecting people and places by inspiring audiences worldwide. Spotlighted in other numerous publications such as Tatler Magazine, Conde Nast, and The World of Interiors, among many, Popko is also a mother of three, a teacher and an author.
Honored to speak at the Czech President's Inauguration Anniversary, Popko presented her artwork to the President and First Lady of the Czech Republic. Popko also exhibited in the U.S. Embassy in Prague, presenting her work to His Excellency, the U.S. Ambassador, and was later invited to display her art in the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence– a first for any artist historically at the Petschek Villa. Among many iconic spaces around the world, Popko exhibited at Antoni Gaudi’s La Padrera Casa Mila in Barcelona as well as during Art Basel in Switzerland– considered the world’s largest, most prestigious art fair for contemporary and modern art. Additionally, April has participated in shows in Venice, Dubai, Paris, Berlin, London, New York, Quebec, Marrakech, Milan, Palma, Grenada, Canary, Zug, Crete, Seoul, Oslo, Miami, Massachusetts and extensively in Prague.
From a large multigenerational family of artists, April continues the tradition of creating public installation art. Among her most notable works are the Popko Wings housed in the Žižkov Tower observatory for which she was honored by the U.S. Embassy diplomats, and cultural attachés as the first American artist to have a permanent art installation in one of the World Federation of Great Towers. Popko was also recognized locally as the first American to receive the 2nd highest Medal of Honor from her Mayor for her contributions to her community, and more specifically, for creating the colorful Popko Rainbow Stairs. In addition to her abstract paintings, Popko breaks boundaries by exploring new creative art forms and techniques, expanding to the territories of monoprints, bitcoin art, writing, and multi-media installations.
Born in Massachusetts, April is an active member of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, home to the country's oldest art community. Popko also uses her art to support charities and organizations, to promote communication and connectedness. Currently based in the Czech Republic since 2003, April paints from her Prague 5 studio, using the energy she gains from her time in Cape Cod. She is inspired by nature and communicates her experiences of living between two worlds. Her vibrant, texturized abstractions are often inspired by her travels abroad.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
“My obsession to paint was born from the need to communicate in a complex, foreign world. Since 2003, I have lived abroad, and in a diverse, “global community” I was searching between language barriers and cultural differences. I had questions about what I could contribute to society by being an American living in the Czech Republic and I needed to express myself without words. Through art, I reinvented myself to convey what I needed the outside world to understand. In this transformative process, I discovered fearlessness and, unexpectedly, a massive sense of connection. My art became the medium in which I could communicate my energy and build bridges between the gaps which I thought had existed—linking countries, communities, genders, lifestyles, cultures, languages, and even the space between heaven and earth. I aim to bring viewers together through my art so that they too find purpose, connection, and understanding as an essential part of the universe.” --April Popko
