Sea People by Antoni Batzu
Around 1200 BC, the kingdoms of the Near East were flourishing, with commercial empires ruled by absolute rulers and aristocracies. Egypt, the Hittite Empire, and Mycenae, confident in their power, divided their areas of influence. This era of prosperity was abruptly ended by a coalition of enigmatic peoples from the sea, whose destructive force brought chaos and collapsed several civilizations. These were the Sea Peoples, fast, aggressive, well-armed, and unpredictable—a phenomenon the world had not seen before.
They initially targeted major coastal cities throughout the Mediterranean and then advanced towards the capital of the Hittite Empire, where they launched a decisive attack on the royal palace, dismantling one of the most influential empires of the ancient world.
Ramses III chronicled their impact, stating: “In their islands, these men began to conspire against us. Lands were in turmoil, scattered in war; no country could resist their weapons. All cities were destroyed; they imposed their hands on the circle of the earth...” The Sea Peoples, aboard their bull-headed ships as swift as swarms of hornets, strategically understood that disabling the empire's central power would lead to its downfall.
