"Glas in Lood" (Stained Glass) Bitcoin Logo by Pleb Royale & Glasatelier Claire
Transparent, translucent, opaque and reflective at the same time. So is the nature of Stained Glass AND of Bitcoin too. Just like stained glass, Bitcoin is at the same time:
1. Transparent, due to its open nature.
2. Translucent, as in only being able to speak in degrees of probability when trying to trace transactions (FY, Chainanalysis!)
3. Opaque, not only because of Satohi's anonymity and disappearance but also thanks to the various ways to coinjoin and apply proper transaction hygiene
4. Reflective, because when eventually widely adopted, its purchasing power will indicate truthfully the state of the global economy
The first traces of stained glass have been found in Egypt and Mesopotamia, centuries before the start of our era. All kinds of glass objects with the most beautiful shapes and colors have been found in Egyptian tombs. The oldest stained glass windows date from the ninth century. They mostly had religious significance and were mainly placed in churches and cathedrals. The Romans put stained glass on the map. They connected pieces of colored glass together in a specially made frame. The oldest surviving complete windows date from the eleventh century and can be admired in Augsburg Cathedral in Germany where they depict three Biblical characters: Hosea, David and Daniel.
The process is very labor intensive as it means first creating the colored panes of glass, either by adding pigments to the molten glass before making panes, or by painting and branding the glass after the panes have been made.
Next, the glass needs to be cut and shaped to design specifications.
One must think carefully about the order in which the individual pieces are placed within the lead strips. These strips can have various thicknesses too and are usually H-shaped for inner pieces, and U-shaped for edge pieces.
All in all, this work combines these ancient techniques with the new monetary tech that is Bitcoin.
